The Pixel Watch 3 Might Finally Tackle a Key Weakness of its Predecessors

The Google Pixel Watch 2 has established itself as one of the trendiest wearables on the market. Addressing many concerns from its predecessor, this second-generation smartwatch from Google impresses with stellar performance, a range of features, and impressive battery life all bundled into a compact design. However, when compared to its rivals, there's a notable drawback – its limited size, available only in a 41mm casing. This is in contrast to the best Android smartwatches that offer multiple size options, with the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic, for instance, available in a generous 47mm casing. Luckily, it seems Google is gearing up to address this size issue with the rumored launch of the Pixel Watch 3 in two different sizes.

Sources from 9to5Google suggest that Google is actively working on two size variants for the upcoming Pixel Watch 3. Although the specific case sizes remain undisclosed, the second option is expected to be larger than the 41mm casing found in the current Pixel Watch 2. This model boasts a 1.2" circular screen and houses a 306mAh battery.

A larger casing opens up possibilities for Google to integrate a more expansive 1.3" display or even larger. The increased internal space not only allows for a bigger battery, potentially enhancing battery life, but it also provides room for additional health sensors, enhancing health tracking capabilities.

If Google indeed launches the Pixel Watch 3 in multiple sizes, users might need to switch to 22mm bands for the larger variant, deviating from the 20mm bands used in the current Pixel Watch 2.

Beyond just a size upgrade, Google should consider minimizing the bezels surrounding the Pixel Watch's display to achieve a sleeker appearance. Without this adjustment, the bulky bezels may become even more pronounced on a larger 46mm variant.

The smaller size of the Pixel Watch 2, and its predecessor, might look awkward on individuals with larger wrists. Introducing a larger casing option would alleviate this concern, providing a compelling alternative for users seeking extended battery life.

Thanks to its enhanced internals, the Pixel Watch 2 can already last an entire day with the always-on display feature enabled. However, a 45mm variant with a more substantial battery could potentially push the limits, offering an impressive 30–36 hours of battery life. A larger Pixel Watch, equipped with a bigger screen and an enhanced battery, could prove enticing for users currently not using Pixel Watches, encouraging them to consider an upgrade.

As of now, there are no rumors of Qualcomm releasing a new chipset for the Wear OS platform, so the Pixel Watch 3 will likely stick to the existing Snapdragon W5 chipset. More details about Google's smartwatch lineup for 2024 should surface as the launch date approaches. It's anticipated that the watch will make its debut in early October, aligning with the introduction of the Pixel 9 series, following the pattern of the past few years.
