Exploring Authentic Brands' Collection of ChatGPT-Powered Smart Glasses

Exciting developments are on the horizon for ChatGPT, as it ventures into uncharted territory—the world of smart glasses. Set to debut in February, the Nautica by Lucyd collection will showcase OpenAI's chatbot in an innovative collaboration between Innovative Eyewear and Authentic Brands Group. The Nautica launch is just the tip of the iceberg, as this partnership is poised to introduce branded smart glasses for Eddie Bauer in March, followed by Reebok at the close of the second quarter. Powering these ventures is Innovative's Lucyd platform, the force behind its own smart glasses collection and the backbone of the ABG portfolio.

While the market for smart glasses may seem saturated, Innovative and ABG are banking on a winning formula that combines a fashion-forward approach, affordability, and advanced functionality. Their gamble is that this unique blend, coupled with the excitement surrounding the technology that fueled the current AI boom, will resonate with consumers.

Harrison Gross, CEO of Innovative Eyewear, draws parallels between the trajectory of smartwatches and smart glasses. He notes that smartwatches offer increased functionality within a familiar form factor, similar to the approach they envision for smart eyewear. Gross remarks, "[Smartwatches are] delivering more functionality in essentially the same form factor, and roughly the same price point as a regular designer watch, and it’s easy to draw a line from that to smart eyewear that costs the same as regular glasses, but does more," as he shared with WWD.

Unlike the Meta-designed Ray-Ban by EssilorLuxottica, the Lucyd glasses in the Nautica collection do not incorporate cameras. These smart glasses focus solely on audio capabilities, connecting seamlessly to smartphones via Bluetooth 5.2. The frames feature open-air speakers, and microphones are controlled by physical buttons, ensuring they are not continuously active. This design choice enhances the gadget's durability, offering an impressive 12 hours of music and talk time on a single charge. Whether for playing tunes, listening to podcasts, making calls, or interacting with a voice assistant, Nautica's "Spyglass" smart glasses are poised to carve out their niche in the evolving landscape of wearable AI technology.
